The year 1949 saw a new democracy of India when we became sovereign. Imperial Council Hall became the Central Hall of the Parliament. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Chairman of the upper house as he was the first Vice-President of India who was given the responsibility of conducting the Rajya Sabha. He succeeded in shaping the Rajya Sabha and left a legacy which nobody can match until this day. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishann was born in 1880 and has an unique place in the history of independent India. He was a multi-cultural and multi-religious personality. During his academic journey when he was pursuing his Masters in Philosophy, he was actually interpreting Hinduism. He interpreted Hinduism as a tolerant society, not at all parochial. He discovered the links between different religions and Sanskrit and introduced Indian Philosophy to the West in a language comprehensible to western sensibilities. The contemporary and the critics maintained that he was pleasing the west but today we see him as a great visionary, a great communicator whose style of writing Indian Philosophy transcended the boundaries of nation.v

v  The Ethics of Bhagwat Gita nd Kant – An Article by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

v  An Idealist View of Life – A book written by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

His books were very popular in west because he did not load his works with traditional Sanskrit shlokas or the philosophical terms.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan never romanticised the teaching profession. We say that teaching is a noble profession and yes, it is a noble profession but he maintained that there should be a good payment to the teachers and they need to have a social status because when they are happy then can give their best.

When he was leaving Mysore University to join as Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, his students arranged for a flower-decked carriage and it was pulled by the students all the way to the Mysore railway station with Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan seated on the carriage. As a teacher, he was so popular among the students. In real sense, he was a friend, a philosopher and a guide for his students.

He believed that education is not physical fitness or mental alertness but growth in spiritual sensitivity and then only we can be regarded as educated. During his visits to Oxford College for lectures on philosophy, he was knighted by Gorge V but he never liked the title ’Sir’ and always preferred to use ‘Dr.’ with his name just because it was an academic title. He believed right education can solve many complexities of the society.

He said, “What a Philosopher does exactly is done by a Mathematician or a Scientist.”

He wanted human beings to do everything in conscious of God. He valued dharma

He said dharma is paropakara and adharma is parpira. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan said, “Helping other man is Dharma and hurting the man is adharma and if you are pleasing others you are doing and practising dharma. He wrote books and several commentaries are there on Gita, Upanishads, Brahmsutra but none of them are religious translations or do not have any religious connotation which makes him a great thinker and a Philosopher of all times.
